You shouldn’t have to choose between sound biblical teaching and the power of the Holy Spirit. Yet countless Christians are struggling to find a church where the Word of God is preached without compromise, prayer is a priority, and the gifts of the Spirit are welcomed rather than dismissed.
Some have searched for years. Others have moved to new cities only to discover that the kind of Spirit-filled fellowship they once enjoyed is nowhere to be found. Still others attend churches where they love the people but hunger for a deeper move of God.
If that sounds familiar, I want to encourage you. You are not alone, and you don’t have to settle for spiritual isolation.
Don’t Compromise Your Hunger for God
The Bible doesn’t present the gifts of the Holy Spirit as optional decorations for the church. Paul wrote, “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy” (1 Corinthians 14:1).
The early church was devoted to teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42). They understood that following Jesus wasn’t merely about hearing a weekly sermon. It involved growing together, ministering to one another, and experiencing the transforming power of God.
That doesn’t mean every church must worship the same way or embrace every ministry expression. But there is a difference between a church that carefully tests spiritual manifestations against Scripture and one that rejects the biblical gifts of the Spirit altogether.
Paul warned believers not to quench the Spirit or despise prophecies, while also instructing them to test everything (1 Thessalonians 5:19-21). We need both biblical discernment and spiritual openness.
What Should You Look for in a Spirit-Filled Church?
Start with sound doctrine. Spiritual experiences should never take precedence over biblical truth. Look for leadership that honors Jesus Christ, teaches the whole counsel of God, and demonstrates spiritual maturity.
Next, look for a genuine culture of prayer. Is prayer central to the church’s life, or merely something offered before the sermon? Does the congregation believe God still heals, delivers, speaks, and moves by His Spirit?
Finally, consider whether the church equips believers for ministry. Ephesians 4:11-13 teaches that ministry gifts are given to equip the saints and build up the body of Christ. A healthy church doesn’t simply gather an audience. It raises up disciples.
And don’t overlook genuine Christian relationships. We were never meant to fight spiritual battles, endure difficult seasons, or pursue our callings without the encouragement and strength of other believers.

What If There Isn’t a Spirit-Filled Church Nearby?
Geographical limitations don’t have to prevent you from receiving Spirit-filled teaching, participating in prayer, and connecting with believers who share your hunger for God.
Online churches are creating opportunities for Christians to connect across cities, states, and nations. While online participation has its own limitations, meaningful spiritual relationships and pastoral support can extend beyond the walls of a physical building.
That’s one reason we established AHOP.online.
